Amec Morgan Est Astute Submarine Berthing Facility Case Study

Sage Safety forms part of the core project management team for the design and delivery of the new floating jetty facility for the berthing and support of the Astute Class submarines at the Clyde Naval Base. The work has included:

* Setting up and operating the management structures to document the design nuclear safety case for the new infrastructure;

Setting and ensuring the standards for the management processes, including Design Review, ALARP assessments and safety case documentation

* Providing the Chairman and Secretary of the Project Safety Review Committee, through which the safety case for the new infrastructure is integrated with that of the existing Site;

* Setting up and operating the arrangements for Commissioning the new infrastructure;

* Providing the Chairman of the Site Test Authorisation Group, through which the compliance of the built infrastructure is demonstrated to be compliant with the Design Safety Case requirements;

* Undertaking the Normal Dose Assessment of the new facility.

In tackling the outline design for nuclear safety, Sage Safety identified that justification of the craneage was the key risk. Alternative arrangements were examined and commercially available, off the shelf hydraulic pedestal cranes, which are intrinsically safe, were adopted as the low-risk solution.

Sage Safety has provided the expertise to create the safety case for these commercially available, off the shelf cranes, undertaking the analyses, specifying the necessary enhancements and writing the associated technical reports for the fixed cranes and, in partnership with Clark and Standfield Ltd for a further crane, mounted in a self-propelled work boat.

Sage Safety produced the Normal Dose Assessment for the new berths, estimating the radiation dose for all using the new facility.

Faslane High Voltage System Modifications

Sage Safety carried out the Independent Peer Review of the nuclear safety documentation for a major modification to the high voltage distribution system.

HMS Neptune Accommodation Replacement and Miscellaneous Building Projects

Identification of Hazards and eventual assembly of the Pre Construction safety case for the Lift Test Tower.

Sage Safety undertook the safety assessment of the nuclear implications of the Neptune Project, authoring the Preliminary Safety Report, and has assessed and documented the nuclear safety aspects of several minor works projects at Faslane and Coulport.
